This piece captures a moment of internal conflict where the external appearance of the woman contrasts with her internal struggle for autonomy. On the surface, she appears posed for the male gaze, presenting a passive image that avoids unsettling or challenging the viewer. This contrasts with my other works, which reflect female confidence and agency. Here, the painting explores the tension between societal expectations and the desire for personal autonomy, highlighting the pressure women face to conform. The passive pose, seated and waiting, evokes a sense of observation rather than self-assertion. It symbolises the broader narrative of women being positioned for consumption rather than self-expression. This internalised pressure is reflected in the conflict between adhering to ingrained societal roles and seeking empowerment, adding complexity and depth to the piece, which mirrors the struggle between submission and self-liberation.

The warm, earthy tones – ochre, brown, and white – carry a grounding presence while subtly suggesting a desire to fit within conventional expectations. These neutral hues symbolise conformity to societal ideals of femininity, where women are expected to be demure and unthreatening. The figure blends with the background, emphasising a loss of individuality and the pressure to conform. This technique mirrors the figure's internal conflict, as though she has yet to fully embrace herself. The uncomfortable, forced pose highlights the tension between external expectations and personal expression, while the fusion of the figure and her environment amplifies the struggle to reclaim personal power.
